Since we all have different stories behind our singleness and our individual reason to seek out a self help book (feeling clueless with men, getting into the wrong relationships, self-sabotaging relationships, etc), I'd like to first share my story. At the end of the review I let you how I met my fiance, and how this book has specificaly helped us have such an amazing relationship.I first bought this book when I was in my late 20s. I had never been in a relationship prior to that point. I considered myself average or slightly below on the appearance scale. My self esteem was about a 3/10. I constantly compared myself to women who were in relationships with men that I wished I could be with. I always felt that I never measured up. I felt like I wasn't outgoing or entertaining enough in the social setting, and that I wasn't pretty enough. I felt like I was an an extreme disadvantage because of my small chest size (32). Thus, my mentality and approach to dating was hoping I would be lucky enough to find a man who would look beyond my flaws or understand why I was the way I was.Laura Doyle book changed my entire mentality. She empowered me to first love myself, which made it so much easier for men to like me.In the first chapter she encourages you to smile to every man you meet. She deconstructs why we as women are terrified to do this. The reason she goes on to explain is that we are afraid of what will happen next. I live in a big city where most people do not smile at each other.We essentially give up our control of that situation when we smile to a stranger.It was so nerve wrecking for me initially but I forced myself to make eye contact with and smile at man I passed a man on the street or in the store. I started doing this and was amazed at how it changed me. Many guys, (even cute ones!) would smile back! I would marvel to myself "Wow, and I'm not even looking my best today". I truly loved myself and wanted to share the joy of life with others. I no longer felt like a man would have to "look beyond my flaws" or "understand why I was the way I was". I no longer worried about running out of things to talk about on a date.She talks about other areas which I know will be helpful for a lot of women, because my single friends often talk to me about it. Things like, when and how to find out about mutual goals like if he wanted an exclusive relationship, kids, or to be married, etc. I honestly have friends that say they want to find this out on the first date, because they don't want to waste their time (i.e., if the man knows he doesn't want kids and my friend wants them). She talks about how these discussions take you out of the present and into a fantasy future. If you are on a dinner date, you are no longer enjoying the present moment, and his present company, if all that is on your minds is if he wants to have kids one day.I think this is so important because it truly set the tone of my entire relationship.
